Nation Beat @ NUBLU
Impeccable mix of Northeast Brazil sounds melding into the US South

Under the leadership of the young Macedonian / Turkish clarinet virtuoso Ismail Lumanovski, the New York Gypsy All Stars Band has amazed audiences with their jazz-inflected Gypsy and Turkish songs. The All Stars showcases some of NY’s finest musicians including Tamer Pinarbasi from Turkey on qanun, Panogiotis Andreu from Greece on bass, Seido Salifoski from Macedonia on percussion/darbouka and Engin Gunaydin from Turkey on drums. The band performed with such world music icons as Turkish clarinet master Husnu Senlendirici and Bulgarian virtuoso Ivo Popasov.

A totally original 21st century fusion between thunderous Brazilian maracatu drumming and New Orleans second line rhythms, Appalachian-inspired bluegrass music, funk, rock, and country-blues. Their explosive live show — which is frequently known to burst into crowd-wide Carnaval-style drumming and singing — is attracting music fans from a wide demographic: bluegrass and country music fans, Brazilian music lovers, outdoor festival-goers, and pretty much anyone who loves to dance and loves great music.
“A tight rhythm machine … Joyous, get-up-and-shake-it music.” – Mark Schwartz, Barnes & Noble

Panonian Wave @ NUBLU
Balkan Soul World-Meltdown Music

In the ever-expanding local Balkan, gypsy underground scene Panonian Wave are the new kids on the block. The 8-piece band comes truly alive on stage with a ferocious sound of the viola, trumpet, tamborica, synaptic rocky arrangements and a love for the music of Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece and Turkey. Panonian Wave’s lyrics are in both Croatian and English, sorrowfully joyous and tragically comedic. While maintaining devotional love for the traditional roots they are inspired and nourished by, the bands’ repertoire runs the gamut from melancholic stoic Balkan anthems played in 7/8 rhythms to twisty melodies, harmonies and hot Gypsy jazzy romping tunes that will have your booty shaking – all night long.

McCarron Brothers CD Release Party @ NUBLU
Funky Western Swing wall-of-sound

Mixing John Scofield funk and Bitches Brew fusion influences, Frisell-ish country, Radiohead, and free jazz, McCarron Brothers’ new CD Way Down in Brooklyn (Deep Tone Records) is the culmination of two years of regular jamming and one soulfully inspired day in the studio. Live, the group’s penchant for sonic and electronic experimentation and improvisation contrasts with a love for singable pop melodies and a seriously funky groove.

The McCarron Bros. are comprised of guitarist Mark McCarron, saxophonist Paul Carlon, bassist Doug Largent and drummer Russ Meissner. The group melds the best of urban and rural American styles through the compositional talents of McCarron and Carlon, and through choice covers of great songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Wayne Shorter, and Radiohead. Tonight will celebrate the CD release of this new project at one of downtown New York’s finest clubs known for its notorious live jam sessions.

Howard Fishman’s Biting Fish Brass Band @ NUBLU
New Orleans style Funk-laden brass music

The Biting Fish Brass Band features Downtown favorite Howard Fishman fronting a New Orleans-style brass band and performing an eclectic, funky repertoire that careens from street-beat style traditional gospel to surprising covers to Fishman’s own quirkly, fun originals. A former New Orleans resident, Fishman brings his deep affection for Louisiana music to bear, with references to classic R&B stylists Smiley Lewis and Professor Longhair, jazz legends Danny Barker and Jelly Roll Morton, and even explores some of the region’s rural Cajun repertoire. This is small band with a mighty, infectious sound, suitable for both happy listening and ridiculous dancing.

Paradox Trio @ NUBLU
78 rpm Balkan Jazz & Psychobilly

Paradox Trio creates original music inspired by Eastern European, Gypsy and downtown NY traditions cutting across stylistic and geographic boundaries such as Bulgarian kaval music, Klezmer and improv jazz. At this show, the band will play tunes from their new US release “Gambit” that further explores the Balkan, Gypsy and jazz marriage. The album features kaval player Theodosii Spassov on record, who is known for leaving audiences in awe of his technical wizardry, his unique and passionate style and for extending the sonic possibilities of this quintessential Bulgarian instrument. Paradox Trio is Matt Darriau (on sax and clarinet & two unique Bulgarian instruments, the Kaval (end-blown flute) and the Gaida (bagpipe)), Brad Shepik (on guitars and Balkan strings), Rufus Cappadocia (on 5-string cello), and Seido Salifoski (on dumbeks and percussion).

“This hard working crew makes joyful music with an edge, and it happens – from rhythmic Klezmer to offbeat Balkan tunes – with apparent ease.” – The New Yorker

Raw Energy & Riveting Rhythms from Mali

Talking drum (“tama”) master Baye Kouyate from Mali returns to NY for his first performance this year in NYC at Nublu on the Lower East Side. Kouyate’s performances are a journey through a world of highly complex polyrhythms fusing traditional sounds of Mali with influences such as jazz, reggae, and latin grooves, all delivered by a high spirited crew of musicians. Before moving to the US, Baye spent five years in Paris playing alongside French-Ivorian innovator Toma Sidibe. Baye shared the stage with well known artists such as Cheick Tidiane Seck, Mamadou Diabate, Vieux Farka Toure, The Brazilian Girls and Kenny Wollesen.

“Baye’s performances are highly energized explosions of lightning-fast talking drum solos backed by an upbeat dance band.” – Afropop.org
